I Carried You With Me Today by Rebecca Agauas

I carried you with me today.

In my pocket to the coffee shop, where I sipped a latte and ate our favorite croissants. In the bookstore where I read your favorite poet aloud, speaking every word softly and intently so you could hear clearly. At the park where I sat on our favorite bench, listening to the stream of water and watching the birds swarm overhead.

There were no speeches.

No candles were lit.

I didn’t get down on my knees and pray.

Missing you is like that.

I carry you around, and you follow me.

The sun rises and sets every day, just as I miss you deeply every day.

And on my really bad days, I find you in the corner.

Whispering to me to breathe.

Telling me to reset.

Tomorrow you’ll still be gone, but you’ll be alongside me every step of the way.

I’ll carry you with me today, tomorrow, and every day thereafter.
